I heard a soft, padded murmur behind me.

I turned—and there she was.

Voltaire, swanning through the embers in a magnificent pink, padded interpretation of herself.

Phyrrah, reimagined in a suggestively suggestive new self.

“Call me DUVÉ,” she whispered.

A vision beneath a titian waist-length wig, swept back to manufacture just enough height at the crown for an entrance of consequence. A face capable of melting hearts, matched with an attitude that ensured absolutely everything would be forgiven.

Her baby-blue eyes were dusted in hot, diluted pink and sharpened with Zef-black liner, previously seen on her sister—who, for legal and emotional reasons, remains unmentioned.

Her lips, painted in pink and ruby, bore highlights of palest pink beneath a scandalous double gloss.

She wore a long-sleeved black illusion gown with a high neck and a train that slinked rather than followed. Its lace was embroidered in gold, silver, bronze and dirty pink, and smelt faintly of glamour, expensive ash and unfinished business.

At the reverse neckline, a removable padded opera train rose magnificently behind her, created specifically for those delicate occasions when she retired to her private piano nobile.

The press lurked in the shadows.

As she approached, they sprang forward.

“Ms Voltaire!” they cried. “What about the fire?”

DUVÉ stopped.

She surveyed them as though the question were in very poor taste.

“What fire?”
